Cecil Augustine McCann (b. 1892 d. 1897)
Cecil was the third child of Patrick and Wilhelmina. He died on 23 July 1897 at the age of five from a “Cerebral Effusion”. One possibility is meningitis, as one of the complications of bacterial meningitis is fluid on the brain. Meningitis had only been recorded ten years before in 1887, by Dr. Anton Weischbaum in Austria, so was relatively unknown when Cecil died. The mortality rate was very high, over 90%.
